What’s This All About?

Hi, my name’s Stefan.

I’ve been a photographer for around 10 years now and when I first started out it was one hell of a struggle.

Most photographers go it alone, working for themselves for the most part, and it can be pretty difficult to know how to find good advice on everything and anything from,

  • the right kit to use;
  • to coping in different lighting conditions;
  • to posing;
  • to knowing what kind of advertising works;
  • to identifying the right suppliers;
  • to pricing and writing up contracts;
  • to all manner of technical, business and practical questions.

It was just the same for me. And I admit I’ve made a fair few mistakes along the way.

Over the years though I’ve come to feel much more confident in not just the technical aspects of a shoot, but in how to have a great relationship with my clients, and underpinning everything, how to make sure the business is running smoothly and in profit.

I’ve got to the stage now where I wanted to set up this website to share my ideas. I’m not pretending I know it all – far from it – so I’m looking forward to learning from everyone else too. Please feel free to comment at the bottom of any article you want or get in touch direct – there are contact details listed in the sidebar.

But there’s an awful lot I have learnt that I hope will help you avoid many hours of heartache and stress as you set up your own successful business. I’m going to go in to absolutely every aspect of the business I can think of, no holes bared. That will include delving in to my pricing and accounts too, targeting what I think is really important and being honest about the areas that you honestly don’t need to worry about, whatever anyone else might say.

For those of you who have been at it for many years and who may well know more than me, hey, I hope there are one or two tips that will help you too, and please share the love and let me know what works for you.

My background is in all areas of photography, from events to still life to PR, but I’ve focused much more in recent years on portraits and weddings, so that’s my real area of knowledge.

I going to build up some really solid resources for photographers, whether that’s about taking great photos, interacting with clients or setting up a successful business. Most of the information will be included in the articles I post, some I’ll include in free downloads, but I’m also going to write a series of ebooks – very fairly priced I promise – that will take you through the process from start to finish of setting up your own wedding or portrait photography business.

I’m also going to provide information for the client, so advice for the bride and groom or the mum who’s organizing a family portrait shoot. Some of this is going to be just as useful to the photographer, and you’re very welcome to incorporate the jist of it in to your own literature (in your own words please ;) ).

I really hope you find the information useful, and please let me know if there’s anything not covered that I can look at adding.

Thanks very much for reading.
